The Best Sparkling Wines We’ve Discovered in Niagara (and Beyond)
There's something about sparkling wine that makes any occasion feel just a little more special. Whether you're celebrating a milestone, enjoying brunch with friends or simply unwinding on the patio after work, bubbles have a way of elevating the moment.
Over the past year, we've tasted dozens of sparkling wines from Niagara and beyond, ranging from those produced using the traditional method which rival Champagne, to fresh, fruit-forward styles, and even a few sparkling reds! While every palate is different, these are the bottles that consistently impressed us and are the ones we'd happily pour again.
Why Niagara Sparkling Wines Deserve More Attention
Niagara's cool climate is ideal for producing sparkling wine. The region's naturally bright acidity helps create wines that are crisp and refreshing. Many wineries are embracing traditional method production to build complexity and texture.
The result is an exciting range of sparkling wines that can compete with bottles from much more established wine regions, often at a fraction of the price.
Standout Sparkling Wines

Kew Vineyards Pinot Meunier Sparkling (2019 and 2020)
Kew continues to impress with sparkling wines that showcase precision and balance between acidity and sweet. Their Pinot Meunier offers beautiful brioche aromas with bright lemon and crisp acidity. It's refreshing without being simple and has enough texture and bubbles to keep each sip interesting.
Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Rosé Brut
One of Niagara's benchmark sparkling rosés, this lovely sparkling wine is made using the traditional method and offers lively bubbles, fresh red apple notes with a hint of brioche to keep you coming back for another glass. It's wonderfully food-friendly and makes an excellent choice for brunch or summer entertaining.

Château des Charmes Brut Sparkling
This blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is made using the traditional method and balances citrus freshness with gentle bread and brioche notes. We liked how the nibblies we enjoyed alongside transformed the taste of the wine, making it an outstanding companion for appetizers, popcorn and creamy cheeses.
Divergence 2022 Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc
Perhaps the biggest surprise of our sparkling tastings. Sauvignon Blanc isn't usually the first grape that comes to mind for sparkling wine, but Divergence proves it deserves consideration. Smooth, elegant bubbles and a clean, refreshing taste profile make this a unique bottle that stands out from the crowd.

Thirty Bench Sparkling Riesling (non vintage)
Thirty Bench has mastered Riesling, and their sparkling version is no exception. It delivers beautiful Riesling character without overpowering petrol notes, complemented by delicate sweet brioche notes giving way to bright citrus notes on the tongue. It's vibrant, refreshing and dangerously easy to keep sipping.
Big Head Big Bang Black Blanc de Noir
This Pinot Noir sparkling wine kept surprising us with every sip. Fine bubbles, exceptional balance of sweet and acidity makes it feel far more expensive than it is. The subtle richness pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie.

Villa Romana 2023 Cenerentolo Sparkling Red
Sparkling red wine isn't something many people reach for, but this Cabernet Franc-based bottle completely changed our perspective. Packed with ripe dark fruit, cherry and vibrant freshness, it's bold, fun and unlike anything else we tasted. If you're looking to surprise guests, this is a conversation starter.
Beyond Ontario
Beyond Ontario, we also discovered excellent value in wines like Vilarnau Brut Reserva Organic Cava and Henri D'Augan Crémant de Bordeaux, both of which delivered impressive quality for the price.

What We Look For in Great Sparkling Wine
Our favourite sparkling wines weren't necessarily the most expensive or the most famous. Instead, they shared a few qualities:
- Fine, persistent bubbles rather than aggressive fizz
- Fresh fruit balanced by lively acidity - not too sweet or tart
- Crisp finishes without harsh bitterness
- Enjoyable on their own or with food
- A style that makes you want another glass (okay, this is a quality we look for in all wines!)
Final Pour
Sparkling wine has never been more exciting, especially in Niagara. From traditional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir-based sparkling wines to refreshing Rieslings, vibrant rosés and even sparkling reds, there's a bottle for every palate and every occasion.
If you've only been reaching for sparkling wine for special occasions, consider this your invitation to enjoy it year-round. Some of our favourite wine memories have happened on an ordinary Friday evening with a chilled bottle.
After all, sometimes the best reason to open sparkling wine is simply just because.
